News...

I have some work on display at Projekt 30! I stumbled upon their site a few months ago while researching network opportunities. Projekt 30 hosts profiles of all different types of artists, from painters to photographers and anywhere in between. They run monthly juried shows for their online gallery (where my work can currently be seen), aiming to connect artists with galleries across the country.

In other show news, I'm a finalist in the international Donkey Art Prize competition!

Gold Things Don't Scan Well

I've had a huge work boom in the last week. My apartment is a mess of pulp and little strips of cut paper... and I love it! I've been experimenting with some metallic papers, which creates a whole mess of problems. This paper is extremely delicate. Even a single finger print will make a dark, oily spot, ruining a possible work of art. They also don't take ink very well, as it tends to clump together as it's drying.

But after working out all those kinks, the hardest thing was getting a decent picture of it! My poor scanner couldn't handle the shine, and spit out a pixelated blue (blue?) image. I decided to try using my camera. Lighting was key, as any light source gets reflected and distorts the picture. I tried and tried, and am still not completely happy with the file, but as Mike Myers would say "I love goooooooooold!"

Eeh ma tante!!!!!

My ceiling is leaking! And since I have the worst luck in the world, it leaked in only one spot: right above where I keep my works in progress (thank god my portfolio was stored elsewhere!!!!). I was gone when it started and came home to find water dripping off the window sill and into my file cabinet. The result was over 100 sheets of paper bleeding on to each other. Some were ok, but others... not so much. After crying for about an hour, I realized that I could turn my misfortune into an artistic revelation. Several pieces looked kind of cool, dare I say, better than they did originally. So now I'm obsessed with recreating it. My hands may be permanently dyed blue, but hey, you have to suffer for your art, no?

Sidenote: My wonderful, fabulous high school art teacher Rachelle Beaudoin just created "The Berlin Dictionary", a collection of words and phrases (many with French Canadian influences) unique to Berlin NH. Ms. Beaudoin (or Rachelle, as she now tells me to call her, and which I still feel weird about) was one of the first people to recognize something artsy in me, and really encouraged me to pursue it. And this dictionary that she's created is just hilarious. For years friends have made fun of my "made up" words (Eeh ma tante! being one of them). Now I have proof that it's not just me! WMUR recently did a piece on it, which can be viewed here, and the Berlin Dictionary and be purchased here.

Birch Bark

I had the idea to print on birch bark about a month ago. Growing up in northern New Hampshire, my family didn't have a television (at least not one that got any channels) so I spent most of my time outside, alone in the woods. One of my favorite spots was just beyond our yard, past the raspberry bushes that marked the beginning of the forest. There I found the most amazing birch tree. Rusty 19th century farm equipment was scattered at the base, so long forgotten that it had become part of the tree itself. I loved finding these little pieces of my home's previous inhabitants, and decided that I too needed to leave something behind for future generations. I placed my one of my favorite toys (if memory serves it was a troll doll - don't judge. I was 7) at the giant tree's roots, carving my initials just above it. The tree (and presumably my awesome troll doll) have since been destroyed by a housing development, but I never forgot about it. I'm not a big self portrait person, but when I decided to print on bark I knew that the image had to be of myself.
